| This devala is situated on the sea side beyond
the 96th km post on the Colombo-Galle highway.
Although the people of the area consider this
temple to be at least 1,300 years old, there is
no evidence to prove this theory. From the
existing historical records and the structural
evidence it is more than 300 years old.
The Devalaya or the shrine for the god on the
shore was constructed very recently. The god who
is known as ‘Devol’ is worshipped at this
shrine. The island itself is extremely small and
there is a deep well, which is supposed to
contain fresh water. This was a part of the
mainland when it was first constructed. Now it
is about 500m away from the shore due to the
effects of erosion. |
